A Balanced Mind and Body

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

To obtain and retain a peak level of performance in the long term, it is not enough to have a balance in all areas of your mental life; as in achieving a balance in your relationships, your business, your spiritual and your career.

“It is essential to balance the mind and the body,” I informed a client at the beginning of the second coaching session. “You can’t have one without the other; they compliment each other.”

Far too many people focus their efforts on improving their mental patterns and behaviour, and neglect another important part of their success, and that is their body.

An enriched body, enhanced through exercise, creates a stronger essence within you, makes you feel better about yourself and increases your self-confidence. And the great added advantage is that it reduces stress by as much as 65%.

By simply exercising moderately 3 or 4 times a week you gain all of the above benefits, and more importantly you get rid of that ‘dream crusher’ called stress.

When you reap all of these benefits you will have a strong sense of physical and mental balance that will carry you forward in achieving your desires in your life.

Likewise, coaching is about stepping up in all areas of your life to create a balanced approach to life.

For you to lead a happy and satisfying life you would need to achieve total balance in all the 7 areas of you life. It is a prerequisite that you focus all your attention on the following 7 fundamental areas:

Financial Independence
Business or career
Free Time
Health and Well-Being
Relationships
Personal Development
A service back to your community

You will have a complete sense of happiness when you find balance in these areas. You find that balance by utilising the B-ALERT system. This 6 step system has been around for many years and is there to assist you in finding that balance. Here is a summary of that system:

B- Blueprint: before you go to bed, spend 15 minutes planning the next day. List and prioritise your goals. While you sleep your unconscious mind will work on those plans to make them easier to achieve.

A- Action: the next day take the relevant actions on your goals.

L- Learning: be a continuous learning machine. Read more books, listen to CDs and attend seminars or evening classes that are related to your goals.

E- Exercise: take care of your body as well as your mind. Exercise for 30 – 45 minutes 5 days a week and mind your weight. You accomplish much more when you have energy and feel better about yourself.

R- Relaxing: take time off on a regular basis. Plan vacations or weekends away, take cat-naps, go to the movies. Arrange your Free Time.

T- Thinking: before you sit down and plan the next day, reflect upon the day just gone. What did you do well and what can you improve on?

Are you willing to adopt these 6 simple steps into your life for all-round happiness and satisfaction?
