I have had about 8 sessions working with Natalie. The first couple of sessions were about identifying areas to address which we adapted over time as original areas for attention were addressed and new areas were spotted.
Natalie was not afraid to challenge me, but without being judgemental in any way.
The key, I feel, to making the sessions work lies in being made to think - you are neither given the “right” answer, nor told to go away and think about it. Much of the time we spent working through scenarios to a solution. Sometimes this took me outside my comfort zone (but why not? the sessions are there to learn from); sometimes the solution was obvious; other times, it seemed to be very much a case of “granting myself permission” to work in a different way.
To make the most of the sessions, it is necessary to put into practice what has been rehearsed in the one-on-one sessions, so that new ways of dealing with situations are learned and become normal behaviour. Natalie can’t make the changes for you!
Finally, it’s a positive way to work - “what can we do better and how can we do it?” - rather than the perhaps more common style of blaming the past for everything.
I am now on maternity leave, and whilst most of our time was spent addressing work scenarios, I know that there will be situations where I can put our good work into practice outside the office environment - they are life skills, not pure work skills.
