What Would You Do If…
As a coach, I have found this particular question to be very exciting and intriguing, “What would you do, if you only knew that you could?”
Some clients respond by raising their eyebrows silently, others take in a deep breath and hold it in deep thought, until I remind them to resume breathing. Most of them, however, simply resurrect a list of wishes.
The idea behind this question is for it not to simply scratch the surface, but for it to go much deeper. It is a soul searching question that could allow you to achieve much more in your life.
When we asked one of our younger clients this question, he sat back in his chair and closed his eyes.
A couple of minutes later he smiled and went on to inform me how he can picture his bedroom as a child: each wall a mosaic of pictures of courtroom events and magazine and newspaper cut-outs of dramatic trials.
He went on unfolding his younger years, until he suddenly frowned and told his tale of family complications that lead him to quit law school.
By the end of the long session, the man had rekindled his burning desire to accomplish his forgotten childhood dream of becoming a lawyer.
Within a couple of months, this young man was registered at law school and had found a junior job in a respectable law firm. His dream, his ‘what would you do’ came back to life. He went back to follow his passion, and the inspiration gained allowed him to be more fulfilled than at any other time in his life.
If you ask yourself, “What would I do, if I only knew that I could?” What would it be that you would do?
