How to Start a Conversation

“I do fine with people I know. It’s those that I don’t know that I have a problem starting up a conversation with,” remarked a client during one of my workshops.

I am sure most of us are aware that a lot of people love to talk about themselves! So, all we have to do is make use of this small bit of information.

Start off by asking the person whom you wish to meet or communicate with a couple of ‘conversational questions’. As you listen, each question can lead to a set of other questions.

Have fun whilst you get to know someone.

Here are a few easy questions to help you get started. You can rephrase them any way you like so that you are comfortable with them:

• What did you do last weekend?
• What is your idea of a romantic weekend or dinner?
• What did you think of the presentation?
• Which part of the seminar did you enjoy the most?

As the person opens up to you, show genuine interest and gradually participate more in the conversation.

Are you willing to prepare a handful of questions and approach a person you want to talk to?
