Finish Off What You Started

At the end of a workshop I conducted last week, one of the attendees approached me and took me aside.

He informed me he had trouble finishing off what he starts. He would initially delve into the assignment full of enthusiasm. Yet, half way through his attention is drawn elsewhere; either to the coffee machine or another seemingly more interesting task to work on.

This had happened so many times that his work has piled up. Now his procrastination is getting him in hot waters with his manager.

The challenge this person faces is very common.

The suggestion he liked most was for him to come up with a reward, one that he would find very appealing so he can use that as an incentive to finish off each task.

Complete one task and reap its rewards. Then move on to the next task.

A few days later, he called me to tell me that this method had worked wonders for him.

It worked. Why? Because we all love rewards!
