Mental Quiet Improves Concentration

The way to get ahead in life is in the moment that you make that decision that you want to make progress and then get started by taking the first step.

But how do you get started if you cannot focus or concentrate on the task at hand? This issue was of great concern to one of my clients who was a younger, single mother.

“I can’t concentrate on my work,” she started to explain. “My children keep interrupting me to the point that I have to wait until they’re asleep before I could even start on my work. I’m due for a promotion and I want to make sure I get it.”

This is immensely common these days as many people bring work home, or take on extra jobs to get added income. However, constant interruptions of any kind tend to delay starting the task and may hinder the value of that project.

In order to concentrate fully and effectively to produce quality results you have to be mentally calm and at peace; you have to be relaxed mentally and physically. You have to be in a resourceful and focused state of mind.

Bear in mind that lack of concentration or focus can lead to procrastination.

“If you could find a way to occupy the children after dinner or when the homework is done, what would you do?” I asked. “If you could find a way that works for you and them, then they would be distracted from you for a while leaving you to concentrate on your project, even if it is for a short while.”

“That would be a blessing. It’s at least a step in the right direction,” she agreed. “I will think about it and see what I can come up with.”

“You can also explain to them,” I continued, “that as there is a time for them to do their homework, similarly there is a time for you to do your homework. Play around with those ideas and see what happens.”

What one thing could you do to give yourself more space to concentrate on your tasks or projects?
