Lasting Change
I once had a young client who wanted a head start in life. He attended three seminars and was on a ‘high’ for a few weeks only to return to his normal mindset. He was upset by it all and couldn’t understand why the benefits didn’t last.
I informed my client that to attain long-term change you must first look at your self image; how you see and feel about yourself.
“If you see yourself as an unconfident person, and you walk around with your head down, having negative thoughts about yourself, then that becomes your self image. The seminars won’t change that,” I explained.
You cannot influence a long lasting change of confidence if you continually go against it by physically and psychologically reinforcing the feeling of non-confidence.
“Short gains come and go,” as you have found out, I added. “For you to sustain long term change your self image has to be in line with your objective of being confident.”
“So I have to change my self image?” he asked.
“Yes.”
Inject some fuel to your desire of becoming confident by standing up straight, head up, shoulders back and chest out. Accept and approve of yourself as a person with confidence by having the thoughts of just that. Repeat positive and complimenting thoughts about yourself to yourself.
In a short while, your self image, self esteem, will gradually increase.
Think about this for a minute: How often do you say positive and encouraging things about yourself to yourself?
